At Be Free Young Carers, we understand that military life can bring unique challenges for young carers. Frequent moves and moving schools, parental deployment, changes in routine, and caring responsibilities at home can all have an impact on a young person’s wellbeing and the support they receive.

Our Military Families Project provides dedicated support for military young carers and their families, helping them access the right support at the right time. The project works closely with schools, local authorities, military welfare services, and community partners to ensure military children and young people feel understood, connected, and supported.

We believe young carers should feel strong, capable, and proud of who they are.

How We Support Families

We offer practical and emotional support tailored to the experiences of military families, including:

  • Advocacy with schools, military services and professionals to help raise awareness and identify the specific needs of military young carers.

  • Creating focused groups to support organisations with putting support systems in place for miliary young carers.

  • Workshops and information sessions for young carers, military families and military connected professionals designed around the realities of military family life.

  • Signposting and referrals to relevant services within Be Free Young Carers and the wider community, including:

  • One-to-one emotional support and guidance for young carers.

  • Support groups where young carers can connect with others who share similar experiences.

  • Respite and befriending services

  • Other organisations who specifically provide support for military families.

Working in Partnership

The project works collaboratively with schools, local authorities, military welfare services, and community organisations to ensure military families can access joined-up support and opportunities. By raising awareness of the experiences of military young carers, we help create stronger networks of support around them.

Our Military Families Support Worker has experience working with military professionals and personal lived experience of growing up in the military community.
