Dr Sarah Broadhurst – Chair of Trustees

Dr Sarah Broadhurst is a Chartered Psychologist with extensive expertise in mental health, resilience, and behavioural science. As Chair of Trustees, she brings a thoughtful and principled approach to leadership, helping guide the charity’s strategic direction with clarity and compassion. Sarah is known for her evidence-based insight, calm presence, and commitment to supporting people and communities to thrive.


Professor Roger Eccelston – Trustee

Roger brings extensive experience in science, research, and academic leadership, having held senior roles at Sheffield Hallam University, the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), and as Director of ISIS. His background combines technical expertise with strategic oversight, particularly in performance, innovation, and governance. Roger’s thoughtful and collaborative approach makes him a valuable contributor to the Board’s work.

 


Nicky Mellings –
Trustee

Nicky brings strong financial expertise and governance experience, supporting the charity with careful oversight and sound decision-making. Her meticulous approach to budgeting and resource management ensures the organisation’s sustainability and growth. Dedicated and collaborative, Nicky contributes a strategic perspective that helps Be Free Young Carers deliver impactful support to the young people it serves.


Gavin Jones – Trustee

With over two decades of experience in the technology sector, Gavin brings strategic leadership, strong operational insight, and a deep understanding of digital transformation. His focus on people-first culture and long-term sustainability makes him a passionate advocate for impactful, community-driven work

Laurie Cooper – Trustee

Laurie has a background in finance and has contributed her expertise to the charity’s Finance Committee for several years. Alongside her professional skills, she has also volunteered in frontline roles, giving her valuable insight into the impact of the charity’s work. Known for her supportive, empathetic, and positive approach, Laurie brings both strategic perspective and a genuine connection to the people the charity serves.

Dawn Woollam – Trustee

Bringing a wealth of Dawn brings extensive experience in leisure and commercial play, with a strong background in financial appraisal and stakeholder engagement. Dawn’s passion for creating meaningful community spaces is complemented by her empathetic and energetic approach. As a trustee, Dawn offers valuable strategic insight while maintaining a genuine connection to the people and projects the charity supports.

Carol Dunne – Trustee

Carol has a background in education and extensive experience in safeguarding, developed through her leadership role within Girlguiding. Passionate about supporting and protecting young people, she brings a values-driven and practical approach to her trustee work. Charing the charity’s Quality and Performance Committee, where her insight and dedication help ensure the highest standards across our services.
